My guess is that most of you are wondering why there is photo taken years ago of a man in a Cornell sports jersey holding a lacrosse stick where I usually feature a beautiful, knitted sweater or skein of yarn. The reason is that the anniversary of 9/11 is next week, and here in Park City, we now have a September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.
This year, as I have the past 22 years, I will be remembering a very dear friend of ours, Eamon McEneaney who we lost that day. Eamon is considered by many to be one of the greatest lacrosse players ever and has been inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He was also known for being a consummate team player and that with his infectious smile was how he lived his life. In fact, the first time the World Trade Center was attacked in February 1993, he organized 63 people into a long chain and lead them down 105 flights and out of the World Trade Center. On 9/11, he and 657 others at the company he worked for all died.
Eamon was also a very talented poet. You can read more about his book, A Bend in the Road, here, but I wanted to share one of his poems.
You and Me
You were from the mountains
and there you’ll most likely stay—
learning new brilliance; knowing
the knowledge of the hills…
I shall be by the sea
for like your mountains
she teaches me wisdom,
and when we meet
in the foothills of thought
we will know the same things
differently—

To honor Eamon this year, Wasatch and Wool has partnered with Adopt a Native Elder to knit and crochet hats for those in need on the Navajo reservation. I thought this was appropriate because Eamon’s favorite sport, lacrosse, was first played by Native Americans. He was also an advocate for Native American causes. Please join us here at the store on Saturday, September 14th from 9:30am – 3:00pm while we knit and crochet together during the Day of Service and Remembrance.
Bring yarn from your stash, or if you need more, we offer some great options at the store such as Berroco Ultra Wool or Malabrigo Rios and Washted. Adopt a Native Elder requests machine washable, adult size hats. Refreshments and great conversation will be provided.

At the store, customers often ask me what my current work-in-progress is. I always have a few going at the same time, but the one I am focusing on now is Peacock Tee Solo by Lene Holme Samsøe. It features a pretty lace stitch pattern around the yoke that is very fun to knit.
If you are looking for knitting inspiration, I highly recommend visiting her website Le Knit. Here you will find many beautiful patterns which range from accessories to sweaters, newborns to adults, and beginner to advanced skill levels. I was happy to find several more patterns that use the same peacock pattern that I enjoyed with the tee.

My yarn choice for the tee is Duo from Sandnes Garn. Duo is a 55% Merino wool and 45% Pima cotton blend that is very comfortable for year-round wear. This blend combines the best of both fibers; fabric made from Duo is light, soft, and insulates well. It is a great alternative for people who find pure wool itchy. The yarn’s even texture also ensures that stitches are well-defined, making it an excellent choice for both simple patterns and more intricate designs.
Duo is available in an array of colors, from subtle neutrals to vibrant hues providing options for every taste and style.
The skeins I am using for the project were purchased when I visited Norway last year. I liked the yarn so much I knew that I had to stock it in the store.

Another Lene Holme Samsøe pattern that I almost considered for my Duo is Sommer Ella Solo. I am certain it would knit up just as beautifully as my Peacock Tee Solo.
If you are looking for a cardigan to knit in Duo, Anna’s Cardigan – My Size by PetiteKnit would be a nice choice. This project is also knit from the top down and utilizes raglan increases while maintaining the lace pattern.
Both PetiteKnit and Lene Holme Samsøe have designed adorable children’s patterns using Duo. The first is Anna’s Summer Cardigan. The construction of this one is the same as Anna’s Cardigan – My Size.
The second is Dahlia Barn Solo by Lene Holme Samsøe. The pattern includes three different versions of the dahlia motif. One is a pullover, the second is a cardigan and the third is a dress.
