A Time for Celebrations (and bling!)
Share
There is so much to celebrate these last few weeks of the year. I wish all of you a very merry and bright Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year. Hopefully, you all will be able to enjoy a special time with friends and loved ones. At the store, we are adding one more event to celebrate — our 10th anniversary!

Saks Fifth Avenue holiday window
On a recent trip to New York City, I had the opportunity to view some spectacular holiday windows and displays. One theme I noticed everywhere, from Sézane to Saks Fifth Avenue, is that “bling” is the hottest trend this season. I must share a photo I took of a window at Saks. As I watched, many people stopped to admire this gown by Jason Wu and blazer by Dries Van Noten.
This metallic and shiny trend isn’t new this year, and this trend will continue for the next few years. (People refer to it as “dopamine dressing”.) I expect we will see it used in subtler applications for everyday wear such as metallic thread and micro-sequins.
We have a beautiful, Italian made yarn in the store, Metal Tweed from Gedifra, that features a tweed effect with subtle metallic accents. Made with soft, high-quality alpaca, wool and cotton, it provides warmth, durability, and a hint of glamour. Your knitted, crocheted and woven creations will stand out with its unique shimmer and tactile appeal.
A fun project for Metal Tweed is Positive Vibes Bandana by Susan Ashcroft. This pattern features mosaic knitting (slip stitch) so you only work with one yarn at a time.
If you would like to knit a sweater with Metal Tweed, Back Yoke Sweater by Noriko Ichikawa would be a gorgeous choice! The construction of the pullover is fun and not overwhelming. Notice how the back is knit sideways and then stitches are picked up for the front and back. Our Isager Jensen, The Fibre Co. Lore and Rowan Felted Tweed would also be great yarn choices for this pullover. Videos for many of the techniques used are also included in the pattern.
With Metal Tweed, you can add frills to PetiteKnit’s No Frills Sweater which is a simple raglan sweater with neckline shaping at the front. The fit is slightly oversized, but the wide rib edges and the shorter length give the sweater a feminine silhouette.
A new pattern from PetiteKnit that would be gorgeous in Metal Tweed is Sophie Hood. Like her Sophie Scarf and Sophie Shawl, Sophie Hood is worked in one piece from tip to tip. It is worked flat, back and forth, in garter stitch with built-in i-cord edges. The hood is shaped using increases and decreases, and its back is sewn together at the end.
The pattern was designed for Sandnes Garn Alpakka Ull which we also stock. (Our store sample of the Sophie Hood knitted in Alpakka Ull is almost finished.)
One more idea for Metal Tweed is from Cathy Miller. Designed for our Julie Asselin Leizu DK, Aspen Trails would be soft, shimmery and cozy in Metal Tweed. This poncho can also be worn as a cowl to keep you warm around the neck under your coat.
Our 10 Year Anniversary!
Please join us Friday, January 3rd and Saturday, January 4th as we celebrate our 10 year anniversary!
It has been just over 10 years since I opened the store at Redstone. The store has evolved and even changed locations, but I still love it just as much as I did on day one.
To celebrate we are having a very special evening on Friday, January 3rd from 4:30-6:30pm. Emma Stucker, who many of you met this summer while she worked in the store, and her friend Jocelyn Ginn will play classical music for us as we shop. Emma is studying music performance with an emphasis on the cello at Indiana University. Jocelyn is a second-year student at the University of Utah who loves to write original songs for piano and voice.
This is also a wonderful time to see our new yarns from Dragon Hoard, Noro, Katia, Madelinetosh and our new yarn from a renowned yarn company out of Oslo, Norway. We are thrilled to be among the first yarn stores in the US to carry Pickles yarn.
